My piece started off as more of a ballad type. I had the bpm set at 70 which made the chords sound more dramatic and interesting. I then realized that my beats were not fitting mathematically correct in my session so I raised the bpm to 140. I began hearing a faster taste to the song which made me flip directions quickly and made the drums faster. It now has an asian taste and with the added percussion I think it sounds more like a beach song.
The the rhythm started off very slow originally because I wanted the chords to be super big and dramatic, but then I changed the bmp which automatically made me make the drums faster. The kick pattern is relatively simple and with the bass following it makes the song move better as a whole. I also added a percussive element that sounds like a maraca that drives the rhythm a lot too.
The harmony is my favorite part about making music because it is where my emotions attach to music the most. The chords are the backbone of music and it is very fun for me to come up with different chord progressions. For this piece, I chose to be in Em. It is a fun key for me to play in because it is simple to remember and the chords sound great. I experimented with the Esus2 and Esus4 chords as well to make my progression more interesting.
I sampled an apple loop that sounds nothing like the sound I made. I used the sample to make a choir sounding HEY. It is kind of a percussive element and adds more taste to the track. I enjoyed messing around with the sampler and I can’t wait to get creative with it. I recorded a bell/ride cymbal with a pencil and a metal hydra flask cup. Nothing too crazy but I added a lot of reverb too it and it sounded cool to me. I also made my own pad patch with the synth designer. I made a pad sound and a lead sound to complement the flute melody. They are layered together.
I added a cool delay to the percussive maraca sound to make it sounds faster. It was very fun to experiment with delay. I also added a lot of reverb to my audio recording and it completely changed the sound. I also added an EQ to my melody track to make it more clear and crisp. I also added a compressor to the kick because it sounded lost in the mix when I was balancing all of the tracks.
I chose to write about my tension cue because I have never made a track in this style before, so it was pretty interesting for me. I wanted to test my skills and knowledge to see if I could pull off a true feeling through sound. I believe I achieved that in some way. It started off really boring but then as I started throwing layers on it, it became alive and the ideas started to flow. I sort of compare the sound of it to a Call of Duty soundtrack mixed with a Breaking Bad song. I think I might call it Breaking Duty. I struggled with the structure a lot and it was pretty difficult to add the right changes. Overall, it was really cool to be able to compose something completely new and different. Making this track has made me realize that I have a lot of work to do in order to be better at composing. It was eye opening for sure. I have to work on transitions and also layering more sounds to make my songs/pieces more interesting. I am proud of myself for only using logic plugin as well because I always get too caught up in getting that perfect sound, but I forced myself to only use those stock sounds and it was pretty awesome to be able to compose something with just basic sounds. I will definitely be using a lot more stock plugins instead of blowing my money on 3rd party plugins.
